Step-Up &#8211; 17 March 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was the perfect day for a new piece of cycling extravagance in FNQ.\u00a0 It was time to <em><strong>Step Up<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 For many riders, the time had come to tackle their longest ever ride, and the waves of enthusiasm (or was that anxiety) were on full display.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"font-weight: bold; background-color: transparent;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/?attachment_id=19564\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19564\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19564\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2984px) 100vw, 2984px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At an undisclosed location several kilometres out of Atherton (ie: our place), the day was starting early for the seven riders who had decided to tackle the 300km course (Mary-Ann, Dave, Keith, Nick, David, Chris and Gayle).\u00a0 While some opted for the sleep-over, breakfast and coffee option, others arrived in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/?attachment_id=19565\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19565\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19565 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P3179114-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P3179114-2.jpg 1239w, https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P3179114-2-220x300.jpg 220w, sizes=\"(max-width: 175px) 100vw, 175px\" \/><\/a>darkness ready for the 5.30am kick-off.\u00a0 There was a small degree of concern about Keith&#8217;s location, given that he hadn&#8217;t been seen in the granny flat overnight, but relief after he surfaced from his swag on the lawn.\u00a0 \u00a0Apparently someone hadn&#8217;t warned him about the legendary rainfall in our corner of world.\u00a0 After a bit of last minute preparation &#8211; &#8220;ie: How do you work that navigation thingy&#8221;, most of us headed out to the start line.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/?attachment_id=19566\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19566\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19566\" sizes=\"(max-width: 3159px) 100vw, 3159px\" \/><\/a>Chris was momentarily delayed by some mechanical, which left six of us heading off into the darkness and up Herberton Range.\u00a0 Keith,\u00a0 David and Nick skated on ahead, leaving Mary Ann, Dave and I to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/?attachment_id=19567\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19567\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19567 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P3179126-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"291\" height=\"186\" sizes=\"(max-width: 291px) 100vw, 291px\" \/><\/a>form a happy little trio for the day&#8217;s riding.\u00a0 In the interim, Kim headed into Atherton to help Jenny and Lauren organise the 150km riders sizes=\"(max-width: 445px) 100vw, 445px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After a tour of Longlands Gap and a descent of Upper Barron Road, we met Jenny at our first Control in Malanda before 8am, feeling very pleased with our progress (55km).\u00a0 It\u00a0was then on for a loop of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/?attachment_id=19583\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19583\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19583 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/150km-3-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"304\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/150km-3-2.jpg 1079w, https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/150km-3-2-300x192.jpg 300w, 304px) 100vw, 304px\" \/><\/a>Maragallen Road and Hillcrest Road, where Chris passed us and Nick joined our happy group.\u00a0 We cruised back through Malanda and gave a quick wave to the 150km crew who were gathering at the Control, before heading via Peeramon and Lake Eacham to our second Control at Yungaburra (102km).\u00a0 Glynis and Kim were waiting for us, accompanied by Kev, who had broken a spoke in the 150km and decided to join the volunteers for the day.<\/p>\n<p>We kept our stop relatively brief, and continued on to Control 3 at Atherton (135km), arriving at 11.45am just in time for a lunch<a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/?attachment_id=19569\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19569\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19569 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P3179137-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"327\" height=\"265\" sizes=\"(max-width: 327px) 100vw, 327px\" \/><\/a> break.\u00a0 We had barely started on our sandwiches when Tony rode in to complete his 150km in 5hrs37, closely followed by Tate, Kyal, Joe and Andrew.\u00a0 The coffee shop was already playing host to a swag of other 150km riders, who just may have shortened their ride at the prospect of an early lunch and coffee.\u00a0 (<a day out.\u00a0 \u00a0Twenty two of the 33 starters completed the course, following roughly the planned route (with the obligatory stop for a cold beverage along the way).\u00a0 Another sub-set opted to adjust their course to cater for broken spokes, the use of mountain bikes, unforseen navigational challenges, appealing coffee shops or lost brevet cards.\u00a0 All in a day&#8217;s work for Audax href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/?attachment_id=19574\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19574\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19574 aligncenter\" sizes=\"(max-width: 401px) 100vw, 401px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our 300km group left Atherton in high spirits, anticipating a downhill and downwind ride to our next control at Dimbulah.\u00a0 In reality, the winds mostly stayed away and the temperature steadily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/?attachment_id=19575\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19575\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-19575 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P3179139-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"311\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P3179139-2.jpg 1569w, https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P3179139-2-300x271.jpg 300w, sizes=\"(max-width: 311px) 100vw, 311px\" \/><\/a>climbed until I was feeling somewhat melted out on the back blocks of Springmount Road.\u00a0 Glynis found our slowly melting group somewhere on Dimbulah Road, replenished our water supplies and magically produced some almost frozen ice-blocks from her esky.\u00a0 We pushed on along Leadingham Creek Road, where we celebrated Dave&#8217;s longest ever ride, as well as his birthday.\u00a0 The skies were darkening and the rain was just starting to fall as we pulled into Dimbulah, where Glynis was waiting at Control 4 (210km).<\/p>\n<p>We treated ourselves to a reasonable break while the rain tumbled down around us.\u00a0 It was slightly clearing as we got back on the bikes, all promising to take it easy and work together to tackle the dreaded stretch back towards Mareeba.\u00a0 Bottoms, backs and legs were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/?attachment_id=19570\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19570\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19570 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190317_173628-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"263\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190317_173628-5.jpg 2373w, https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190317_173628-5-300x210.jpg 300w, sizes=\"(max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/><\/a>starting to complain about their long day of work, and we took a few short breaks along the way to stretch out and recuperate.\u00a0 Somewhere along this leg, Mary Ann and Nick clicked over their longest ever ride.\u00a0 Dave&#8217;s discovery that riding with a backpack was tough going fortunately coincided with a welfare check from Kim in the truck.\u00a0 After a spirited debate about the pronunciation of\u00a0 Tyrconnell Road, we paused for a great view of the windmills and brooding storm clouds, before continuing on to Chettle Road and Walkamin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/?attachment_id=19571\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19571\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-19571 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P3179141-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"307\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P3179141-2.jpg 2829w, https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P3179141-2-300x191.jpg 300w, sizes=\"(max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px\" \/><\/a>Kim was waiting for us at Control 5 at Walkamin (271km), ably assisted by Patch (aka the Wonder Dog), who had apparently mastered the art of Audax Controls.\u00a0 The rain had started again, and we worked hard to cheers ourselves with the concept of just 29km to go until we were finished.\u00a0 It was a damp slog up the highway to Rocky Creek, and another slow grind uphill to Tolga for another minor stretching break.\u00a0 The rain cleared as we reached Atherton, where I made the happy discovery that we may finish in under 15 hours.\u00a0 The pace got a bit silly along in the last few kilometres, when the day&#8217;s aches and pains suddenly disappeared, and thoughts turned to the big pot of spaghetti that I knew was waiting with Glynis on the back deck.<\/p>\n<p>We rode together down the dirt roadway to the finish, arriving at 8.25pm after 14 hours and 55 minutes.\u00a0 Keith had finished in 13hrs 30 minutes, and already had a feed, a shower and a nap.\u00a0 David arrived in 13hrs 59 minutes and looked amazingly relaxed and cheerful.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/?attachment_id=19572\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19572\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19572\" src=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190317_203233-2.jpg\" spaghetti and comparing stories, while we waiting for Chris to arrive.\u00a0 Dave and Nick cracked open the Guiness to celebrate Dave&#8217;s birthday and a big day out.\u00a0 Chris had made some discoveries about navigation (all bad) and added a bit of extra riding to his day.\u00a0 He&#8217;d arrived at Dimbulah after our group and decided on a short nap, before regathering his resources for the ride home.\u00a0 Kim had checked on him several times, and could report that Chris remained undaunted about finishing.\u00a0 Unfortunately Chris encountered more of the pouring rain, and was somewhat bedraggled when he arrived after a truly audacious ride of 16hrs 15 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/?attachment_id=19573\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19573\"><img
