{"id":19369,"date":"2018-09-29T00:40:02","date_gmt":"2018-09-29T00:40:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/?page_id=19369"},"modified":"2018-09-29T00:41:01","modified_gmt":"2018-09-29T00:41:01","slug":"the-boulders-and-the-beautiful-oh-no-weve-got-to-go-round-it-12-august-2018","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/?page_id=19369","title":{"rendered":"The Boulders and The Beautiful &#8211; &#8220;Oh No, We&#8217;ve Got To Go Round It&#8221; &#8211; 12 August 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sunday 12 August 2018 was a perfect day for two great Audax FNQ rides &#8211; the 100km &#8220;Boulders and the Beautiful&#8221; &#8211; and the 200km &#8220;Oh No, We&#8217;ve Got To Go Round It&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_20180812_055504.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19379 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_20180812_055504.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_20180812_055504.jpg 1715w, https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_20180812_055504-250x300.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_20180812_055504-768x923.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_20180812_055504-852x1024.jpg 852w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><\/a>In fact, I deemed it to be a super, spectacular, amazing and awesome day to be an FNQ Audax Ride Organiser &#8211; especially as Sean and Mary had the whole deal well under control.\u00a0 To Clarify &#8211; I didn&#8217;t do anything !!!!!!\u00a0 Nope&#8230;. nothing.\u00a0 As a non-organising 100km rider, I neglected to load the course on my Garmin, get an early night, pack my munchies or remember my sunscreen.<\/p>\n<p>I have even happily failed to write a ride report &#8211; given that this task has been taken well in hand by Lloyd, (whose 100km report appears below) and Lauren and Chris (who provided the <a href=\"https:\/\/photos.app.goo.gl\/SEQEJXzNiLa8P74aA\">great photo collection<\/a> from the 200km ride), and David (who added his <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Eh6_Ua6TDDA\">video<\/a> of the opening stages of the 100km).\u00a0 But in the end, I couldn&#8217;t resist adding my own <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/292427420\">photo montage<\/a> of the ride &#8211; look out for one particularly amazing bike.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_5596.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19378 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_5596.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"378\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_5596.jpg 1253w, https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_5596-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_5596-768x574.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_5596-1024x765.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 378px) 100vw, 378px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lloyd&#8217;s 100km Ride Report<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The day began very early for Lloyd and KFC Mike who left Atherton at 4.00AM to drive to Innisfail to meet up with Bob the Builder, Joe, and Unit Mal who had stayed the night in Innisfail. \u00a0Upon arriving at their motel room, the first impression was that odour of testosterone that oozes from elite athletes ready to do battle, probably like the Broncos change room. \u00a0There stood Mal, in his Bananas-in-Pyjamas trousers, and Joe in his glo in the dark, \u201cTour Down Under\u201d Y fronts. \u00a0When Bob appeared in his skin coloured thong, and Mal offered us to try some of his nuts, Lloyd and Mike decided to wait outside.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/briefing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19373 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/briefing.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/briefing.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/briefing-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 268px) 100vw, 268px\" \/><\/a>Peter K joined the rest at the pre-ride meeting. \u00a0He stood out in his Hawaii 5-O combination. \u00a0He even brought along his own German podium girl. \u00a0But with plenty of smart cycling outfits on display, three Tableland riders excelled themselves.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Finally the ride began. The Unit and Joe left in the second group and were seen rarely after that.\u00a0 Peter, Mike, Bob and Lloyd were off at a blistering pace, and Peter and Mike led a group of 15 riders to the Bruce Highway. \u00a0Others in the group were relieved when a cane train crossed the Highway and caused a momentary halt, but one could see the frustration in Peter\u2019s eyes at the delay. \u00a0Finally the flashing red light stopped, and Peter was off again, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_20180812_063810.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19377 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_20180812_063810.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"358\" height=\"210\" sizes=\"(max-width: 358px) 100vw, 358px\" \/><\/a>Pirelli rubber smeared on the highway.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It took no time for the Peter- and Mike-led peloton to be reduced to seven, as the riders streaked through the flat lands towards the Babinda Boulders. \u00a0The seven passed the 200km riders, who attached themselves to the faster seven, making a professional looking group of cyclists for the car traffic to admire.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/riders.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19384 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/riders.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"404\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/riders.jpg 501w, https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/riders-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 404px) 100vw, 404px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There was confusion at the first checkpoint where the 200 km riders were required to be stamped, but the 100 km were to go to the Boulders first, and then stamped on the return. \u00a0Lloyd, Mike and Bob stopped at the checkpoint; whereas Peter and the remains of the seven (David the Townsville Tank, Louise and Wanita) sped off, trying to gain an unfair advantage. \u00a0But due to great rotational riding (Lloyd on the flat, Bob on the hills and Mike everywhere), the breakaway was caught as the road climbed it\u2019s dizzyingly 50 metres to the day\u2019s high point, and all were together again for a photo shoot at the Boulders.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_20180812_083213.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19387 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_20180812_083213.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"328\" height=\"246\" sizes=\"(max-width: 328px) 100vw, 328px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Unit and Joe were sighted on the return from the Boulders (Joe was drafting), but they looked in good form. \u00a0A quick break at Babinda for the leading group, and then on to Bramston Beach. \u00a0The road undulated through farmland, tropical forest, and over creeks where a crocodile was spotted. \u00a0The seven worked well as a team, but it became noticeable that the Townsville Tank was pulling the other six. \u00a0The coffee shop at Bramston was a welcome pause, especially when the German podium girl turned up again.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/bramston.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19374 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/bramston.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"386\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/bramston.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/bramston-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 386px) 100vw, 386px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Legs were starting to get tired, as the return to Innisfail was under way. \u00a0A welcome relief came as Wanita had a flat: for the other six waited and Peter helped with the repair (as distinct from the Boulders breakaway\u2026.). \u00a0Bob took the opportunity to discreetly pass some gas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Bob.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19375 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Bob.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"242\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Bob.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Bob-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 242px) 100vw, 242px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Joe and the Unit were delayed at the Bramston feed stop. \u00a0Joe ordered a double, full fat, non-homogenized, extra cold, malted Milo frappe with extra cream and chocolate sprinkles. \u00a0It took an hour to make.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_20180812_104622.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19376 aligncenter\" sizes=\"(max-width: 352px) 100vw, 352px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Audax lead group of seven was approaching Innisfail. \u00a0Peter had been in front for kilometers. \u00a0The excitement was building. \u00a0But upon approaching the last hill, he could give no more. \u00a0As the others went by, there appeared a tear in his fatigued eyes. \u00a0Bob raced to the lead with a cadence of 200, but died as the crest was within touching distance and he shot to the back like a prune seed. \u00a0Mike and the Tank crested together and sped down the hill to Audax stand. \u00a0A photo finish would have been in order if there were not concerns for the people manning the Audax booth being taken out in the sprint. \u00a0At the end, all were given the same time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_20180812_130616.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19386 aligncenter\" sizes=\"(max-width: 403px) 100vw, 403px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The German podium girl was there at the finish, but strangely the 7<sup>th<\/sup> rider to finish was the only one to get a kiss.\u00a0\u00a0Joe and the Unit completed manfully a little later and with much more dignity. \u00a0The delay was blamed on a missed turn (an excuse normally reserved for Bob). \u00a0Joe ignored his injury for a heroic completion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_20180812_104037.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
