reading)<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What is an Audax Ride?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.audax.org.au\/public\/index.php\/about\/about-audax\">Audax<\/a> is a world-wide long distance cycling club with rides from 50km to 1200km in length. \u00a0The rides are not competitive, and emphasise achievement and endurance rather than speed.\u00a0 Riders travel at their own pace, navigating around a set course and checking in at designated Control points.\u00a0 You will be given a link to map and a cue sheet (written directions) to download and <strong>print out<\/strong> before the ride.\u00a0 At the start, you will get a Brevet Card.\u00a0 On the ride, get your Brevet Card scanned by volunteers at designated control points along the way.\u00a0 Rides are on open roads (no traffic controls), and Audax emphasises safe riding and rider visibility.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1131 aligncenter\" sizes=\"(max-width: 152px) 100vw, 152px\" \/>Do I have to be a member of Audax?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most rides are open to members and non-members.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>How much is it?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The fee\u00a0for members of Audax Australia is $6, and for non-members $21 (includes $15 for a one month membership).\u00a0 \u00a0Some rides may have higher fees &#8211; check the online registration.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Do I have to ride with a group?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All riders start together at a central location. \u00a0From there, you\u00a0can ride alone, with friends or with a group.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What if I can\u2019t keep up?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You ride at your own pace.\u00a0 There is no set speed.\u00a0 You can stop whenever you want, and enjoy a coffee or a bite to eat.\u00a0 It is not a race, but there is a maximum time limit (eg: 6hrs40mins for 100km road; 13hours30mins for 200km road and 7hrs for the 75km dirt).\u00a0 A successful ride is completed within the maximum time limit, following the set route, with the Brevet Card scanned at designated Control points.\u00a0 If you can&#8217;t finish within that time limit &#8211; have fun anyway.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_20160604_101737.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" bring?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ride a roadworthy bike of any type (recumbents, tandems, unicycles etc are welcome) and bring adequate spares (tubes, puncture repair, pump, multitool etc).\u00a0 Give your bike a good check over before the ride.<\/p>\n<p>Bring adequate water and food, or money to buy it along the way.\u00a0 Some rides provide a few munchies at control points (most FNQ rides).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.audax.org.au\/public\/images\/stories\/Documents\/lightingrequirements.pdf\">Audax lighting and reflective vest<\/a> rules apply to\u00a0rides <strong>200km and over or any ride where the time limit falls within hours of darkness.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0This applies on any ride where the\u00a0time limit finishes after dark even if you will be home long before then. \u00a0You are required to fit a front and back light to your bike, and carry (at least) a second front and rear light AND a reflective vest. \u00a0They must be used in any low light condition. \u00a0 (If you are looking to get a cheap \u201chi vis\u201d vest, try <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bunnings.com.au\/our-range\/tools\/hand-tools\/safety-equipment-workwear\/vests\">Bunnings \u2013 $6.95<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The organisers may have\u00a0a small supply of spare lights and vests available on the day, but please don\u2019t count on this.\u00a0 Riders are responsible to comply with these rules, but a lighting check can be conducted by the Ride Organiser on the morning or at any time during the ride.\u00a0 We realise lights and vests may be a sticky issue for some riders \u2013 but please be nice to the Ride Organiser and Volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>Lighting rules do not officially apply to shorter rides, but please be sensible about your safety. \u00a0Lights and visible clothing would be greatly appreciated.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/2-Main-STreet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-56 go?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Check out the preliminary course maps advertised for each ride. \u00a0Final maps and cue sheets become available a few days before the ride.\u00a0 Make sure you download (<strong>or print out<\/strong>) your copy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COVID-19 Rules<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We have made some changes to the organisation of Audax FNQ rides to comply with COVID-19 regulations.\u00a0 Please ensure you maintain social distancing (especially keeping a healthy distance from our Volunteers), use hand sanitiser provided and scan your Brevet cards.\u00a0 Allow volunteers to serve you with food and muchies.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Control Points.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Each rider will receive a Brevet Card, and will have to stop at designated Control points along the ride to have the card scanned and their arrival time recorded.\u00a0 Opening and closing times for Control points are written on your Brevet Card. \u00a0Volunteers will normally be at the Control points.\u00a0 If you want to have your card officially validated by Audax Australia, hand it in at the end of the ride and it will be mailed back to you in a few weeks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/098.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-99 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/098-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"173\" https:\/\/www.longrides.bike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/098-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There may be\u00a0unmanned Controls at turnaround points and other spots on each ride.\u00a0 At these locations, riders need to stamp their cards (or on the back in boxes marked \u201cSecret Controls) with a stamp that will be hanging on a street sign.\u00a0<strong>NB:\u00a0 Under COVID rules &#8211; there are no secret stamps at turn-arounds.\u00a0 Just enjoy the experience.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Maps and cue sheets.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Navigation is a central aspect of Audax riding.\u00a0 There are no marshals providing directions or specific Audax signs on the course. \u00a0An email will be sent to each rider after the close of registrations (a few days prior to the ride) giving the final map and cue sheets. \u00a0<strong>Please print them out<\/strong>, as they are your route guide for navigating your way through the day. \u00a0You will be referring to the cue sheet throughout your ride, so may want to resize the cue sheets to fit a plastic bag or another holder on your bike.<\/p>\n<p>You can also download a copy of your ride onto a Garmin 1000 or 810 (or similar) when the final versions of the maps are issued just before the ride.<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers at control points can help if you get stuck, but finding your way using the cue sheet and map is a central part of an Audax ride.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Food, drinks, toilets, coffee.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Audax riders must be self-sufficient. \u00a0The options are to bring along enough to sustain you for the ride, or stop off during the ride for supplies. \u00a0Your cue sheet will have facilities marked on them. \u00a0The rides usually pass several great coffee shops. \u00a0Check your cue sheets to work out where your refuelling stops are located.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Support during the ride.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Friends and family are welcome to be at Control points or park anywhere else along the route to encourage you along, but should not follow riders or provide support. \u00a0Please ensure that you provide your own support along the way (including what you carry with you or obtain en-route). \u00a0The obvious exception is in emergencies, where assistance should be provided to any rider in difficulties.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What if I get halfway and can\u2019t make it?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There will be an emergency phone number for the sag wagon on the day.\u00a0 Check the front of your Brevet card.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Volunteers?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019d like to be part of the day, but don\u2019t feel up to riding, we\u2019d love to have you as a volunteer.\u00a0 Volunteers help with rider registration and at Control Points along the way.\u00a0 Please let us know.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>And about the weather&#8230;..<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAudax\u201d grew out of the early days of the Tour de France, and comes from the word \u201caudacious\u201d. \u00a0We ride in all kinds of weather (apart from stupidly dangerous stuff) and at all times of day. \u00a0Google YouTube Audax and you\u2019ll see what we mean.<a 1632w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 211px) 100vw, 211px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Parking.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You may\u00a0be asked to park in a central carpark near the venue, and not in the street near the ride start or in front of nearby shops. \u00a0We want to remain on good terms with our neighbours.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Starting Times.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Under COVID-19 rules, our rides now start in smaller waves from 6am to 6.30am.\u00a0 When you are ready to go, collect your Brevet card and have it scanned as you enter the start area anywhere between 6am and 6m15am.\u00a0 \u00a0Riders in the 200km rides may have a check of lights and reflective vests. \u00a0A short rider briefing will be conducted at in the start area and riders will start in smaller groups between 6.00am and 6.30am. \u00a0The plan is always to be perfectly on time!!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Road Rules.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The rides are conducted on normal, open roads. \u00a0Riders must obey all normal road rules. \u00a0Help us keep our good reputation with the Police, local motorists and other officials!!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Audax Badges and Medals.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Riders who have ordered badges and medals may be able to collect them on the day (for 100km and 200km rides only).\u00a0 In some cases, they will have them sent after Brevet Cards have been processed by Audax Australia. \u00a0Medals and patches are only awarded on the successful completion of the ride. \u00a0Any rider who does not complete their ride will have their money for badges or medals refunded.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Finishing.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Check in at the finish point, scan your Brevet and have your final time recorded.\u00a0 You can keep your Brevet card or leave it with the Volunteers for official Audax validation (and mailing back to you).\u00a0 Then retire for a coffee and relax with the rest of the group. \u00a0Rider times will be posted as soon as possible after the ride.<\/p>\n<p>If you do not complete the ride, or need to pull out for any reason, please notify a volunteer or the Ride Organiser. \u00a0(If you are not checked into a control point or the finish, we will come looking for you!!)<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Photography.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019d love to hear from anyone who gets some good shots or GoPro
